What Is Bird Week?

Bird Week is seven days of bird walks and educational events, all about birds, across Halifax Regional Municipality! Volunteers lead guided beginner birding walks for the public in all 16 HRM districts. We invite councilors and their constituents to join these bird walks, discuss local bird conservation, and engage with the community.

Bird Friendly Halifax

Bird Week is an initiative of Bird Friendly Halifax, a coalition of environmental organizations, researchers, the municipality, citizen scientists, and other bird lovers working to make HRM a friendlier place for our avian neighbours. In 2022, after an in-depth assessment under Nature Canada’s Bird Friendly Cities program, Halifax Regional Municipality was narrowly awarded Entry-level Bird Friendly City status for its work on things like the Green Network Plan, its pesticide ban, and the many contributions to bird conservation made by local conservation groups like ours. Our coalition is working now to improve that score and, most recently, succeeded in getting council to commit to a staff report exploring bird-friendly design guidelines for municipal works. We meet bi-monthly to work on ways to reduce impacts to wild birds through policy change and education. Learn more about Bird Friendly Halifax and join us here!

As part of its commitment to the Bird Friendly Cities program, Halifax Regional Municipality has agreed to observe an annual Bird Week celebration, and our coalition works together to host this celebration each year.
