In late 2021, the province released the 9 years-overdue updated Recovery Plan for the Mainland Moose. Nature Nova Scotia commends the province for finally producing a sound plan and, in particular, for emphasizing the immediate need for additional research and changes to forestry practices in moose habitat. Now, we must hold the Nova Scotia government to this plan. Help us Save The Mainland Moose by taking the following actions, today:

On November 25th, after the Nova Scotia government had to be brought to a judicial review for failure to follow the Endangered Species Act, your Department released the long-overdue updated Mainland Moose Recovery Plan. In this document, the Recovery Team you appointed give clear and immediate recommendations for conservation action, including the immediate designation of Core Habitat.

The Mainland Moose is at serious risk of extirpation in Nova Scotia. I am asking, after 18 years of inaction from our province, that you finally designate Core Habitat as identified and recommended by the Mainland Moose Recovery Team, and immediately set your staff to work on improved policies that will protect Moose within this area. Seeing how immediate the need for greater protection is combined with the lack of action towards ecological forestry demonstrated by this and the former government, this should include a revised Special Management Practice and emergency halt of all harvest activity on crown land core habitat until the Lahey Report is implemented. Your department could also choose to immediately amend current harvest plans to include only uneven-age treatments or adopt a policy where working public lands within core habitat are only to be leased to the Mi'kmaq, who are experts in sustainable forestry and moose management. You could also work with the Department of Environment and Climate Change to immediately designate all pending protected areas within identified core habitat. Any of these actions would address the needs outlined in your Recovery Plan and contribute to saving the Mainland Moose.
