Celebrate Bird Month

Throughout May, NatureNS is joining other members of the Bird Friendly Halifax coalition in celebrating the birds that make our biggest city their home. Join one of our coalition members at events across the city and learn how to identify local species, hear about trends in urban bird threats, and take action to make HRM more bird friendly.

Monday May 2nd, 10am

City Nature Challenge Bioblitz @ Little Belcher’s Marsh, Clayton Park

Join Ducks Unlimited Canada and the Halifax Regional Municipality for a blitz of Little Belcher’s Marsh! Stop by any time between 10am-12pm where organizers will be using iNaturalist to contribute to international citizen science initiative taking place over April-May. Meet by the bridge, approx 44’40’28.2″N 63’40’36.4″W. Registration is not required, however if you have questions please email Katie at k_scott@ducks.ca and check out the Facebook event.

Learn to Bird Jane’s Walk @ Birch Cove Park, Downtown Dartmouth

Have you ever wanted to get into bird watching and learn more about urban nature? Join birder Emma Bocking on this guided walk around the Birch Cove Park trails and down to Sullivan’s Pond. Some binoculars and field guides will be available to borrow, but bring your own if you have them! Meet at the parking lot at the end of Oakdale Crescent. For more check out the Facebook event.

Family-Friendly Intro to Birding @ Point Pleasant Park, Downtown Halifax

Join the Young Naturalists Club for a family- and youth-friendly intro to birding at Halifax’s largest urban park, Point Pleasant. There will be binoculars available to borrow. We’ll go over ID tips, practice our skills on the avian residents of the park’s forests and shoreline, and learn about ways we can be better bird stewards back at home. And, of course, we’ll feed the chickadees! Please register in advance by emailing Becky at yncns@yncns.ca

Intro to Birding Webinar, online

Hike Nova Scotia’s Intro to Birding webinar is geared for new and experienced hikers interested in learning more about watching and identifying birds. Join Diane LeBlanc, President of the Nova Scotia Bird Society, as she introduces how to bird while hiking. She will cover topics including birding etiquette, equipment, common birds to watch for and areas and times to spot certain types of birds. Diane will share some of her experiences birding in favorite hiking locations. Register online.

Spring Warbler Walk @ Jerry Lawrence Park, Tantallon

Join birder and Nova Scotia Bird Society member Jason Dain on a warbler walk as part of the 2022 NatureNS AGM and Celebration of Nature. Open to members of NatureNS and our member groups, and others by $10 fee. Register for the Celebration of Nature online.

Canada Warbler Walk and Talk @ Shearwater Flyer Trail, Cole Harbour

Join biologist Cindy Stacier for a walk and talk along the shearwater flyer trail, all about our Endangered Canada warblers! This event is part of the 2022 NatureNS AGM and Celebration of Nature, open to members of NatureNS and our member groups, and others by $10 fee. At the 2022 Celebration of Nature, speakers Cindy Stacier, Amy Mui, and Hope Swinimer will explore trends in bird injury and mortality in HRM, as illustrated by Hope for Wildlife’s bird intake data from over the years.
