Shorebirds have declined in Canada by over 40% since the 1970s, according to the latest State of Canada’s Birds Report. Habitat loss and disturbance at breeding and nesting sites are to blame, with beach environments particularly impacted by human activities. Join us for a Fall Migratory Bird Day celebration at the Guzzle, a hotspot for shorebird diversity and home of Boot Island National Wildlife Area. Most of our migratory shorebirds should have moved on by October, but with temperatures rising and all kinds of wacky things happening to our planet, it’s just as important that we keep and eye out for (and report) birds that we see lingering in fall. We’ll practice our species ID skills, talk about shorebird conservation in Nova Scotia, and learn about ways of taking action for birds.
For the young birders, we have games and birdy take-homes and, for the grownups, Bird-Friendly certified coffee to try!
Meet us at the end of E. Long Island Rd in North Grand Pre. There is a small parking lot by the dyke and a light climb to view the mudflats. Please note, this site is not easily accessible for those with mobility issues, but there are other sites that are! Reach out to our staff with questions: info@naturens.ca
